Founded in 1994, SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a global, nonprofit organization that helps people overcome problematic addictive behavior through free in-person and online meetings. SMART employs science-based techniques that have proven to be effective in helping individuals overcome addiction to substances and harmful activities. SMART has been endorsed by the leading government and medical authorities in Australia, the UK, and U.S.

BIOGRAPHY: 

Joe Gerstein, MD, FACP was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, now retired.He is also Co-Chair of the American Society of Addiction Medicine Criminal Justice Special Interest Group. He is one of the Founders of SMART Recovery [Self-Management Addiction Recovery Training],
501c3, which now supports thousands of free SMART meetings in 28 countries, led by trained facilitators. Joe has led almost 4,000 SMART meetings, 800 in prisons and jails. The SMART program is recommended as "evidence-based" by NIDA, NIAAA, SAMHSA, the Surgeon General, NADCP, ONDCP, the US, Canadian, UK, Australian, Swedish Prison Systems and the Punjabi Constabulary.
