SESSION TITLE:
Developing a social support intervention for individuals in early recovery

SESSION DESCRIPTION:
Given the importance of social support in addiction recovery, we are currently developing a free web-based social support intervention to introduce and connect recoverees to resources such as support group meetings and recovery community centers. Through this intervention, recoverees will receive a short pre-recorded video each night for meeting their recovery goal for the day (e.g., not drinking, attending a support group meeting). These videos, created by people in the addiction recovery community, have two purposes: 1) to congratulate the recoveree on their recovery journey and motivate them in the short-run; and 2) to put a face and voice to multiple pathways of recovery and related recovery support services, thereby reducing informational and psychological barriers to engagement, and sustaining recovery in the long-run. We are currently inviting members of the recovery community to create these videos, and will soon invite recoverees to try out this intervention. To determine if this intervention is useful, we will collect information on their substance use and engagement in recovery services before, during, and after the intervention through questionnaires and interviews. The long-term goal of this intervention is to be a community-informed, freely-available resource to help recoverees stay motivated and build social support to sustain their recovery.
